Adaptations

Polar bears

While most animals cannot survive in the harsh arctic, the polar bear is well adapted to cope with the cold. Observe its various adaptations that help it to survive in its environment.

Birds in winter

Birds fluff up their feathers in winter which allows them to trap more air! This helps to reduce the amount of heat lost from their bodies to the colder surroundings in winter.

Emperor penguins

During the harshest period of winter, emperor penguin fathers have to keep not only themselves, but their egg warm. They do so by huddling together! Penguins in the middle of the huddle are the least exposed to the cold surroundings and thus the warmest. They take turns to shuffle such that every penguin has the opportunity to be in the middle of the huddle.
