Magnets

Electromagnets in Scrapyards

Observe how magnetic metals in a scrapyard get picked up from one place and released in another. What property about electromagnets makes them suitable for the job?

Maglev trains

Maglev trains are a classic example of how the magnetic force of repulsion can be useful in our daily lives! By allowing trains to float in mid-air, less friction acts on the train, causing them to move at much higher speeds. In order for the train to move, magnetic force of attraction pulls the train forward from the front while the magnetic force of repulsion pushes it forward from behind!
