Man’s Impact on the Environment

Effect of plants on soil

Observe how the roots of plants are essential in holding soil together, preventing soil from being washed away by water easily!

Deforestation

Forests are being systematically eliminated all across the world – a process we know as deforestation. Agriculture for palm oil, soy, and cattle, along with logging for wood and fuel are the top causes of deforestation.

Desertification

Topsoil is the most fertile layer of soil. Without the roots of trees to hold the soil together, topsoil gets washed and blown away by rain and wind easily. The ground that remains contains very little nutrients and minerals and do not support the growth of plants.

Loss of habitats

Rainforests are home to over half of the world’s plant and animal species. As rainforests are cleared, these organisms lose their source of food and shelter.
