Plants and Their Parts

Reaching for more light

To reach more light, plants with weak stems cling onto supports such as the bark of other trees using sticky pads, sharp claws or tendrils. As the plant grows taller, it can trap more light, making more food and spurring on the plant to grow even taller!

Transporting water in plants

Water exits the plant through the stomata in the leaves, creating a suction which draws water up through the water-carrying tubes (or the xylem) in the stem of the plant.
